Black Male Unemployment--a Serious Problem

Why are so many black men unemployed? In large urban areas, the unemployment for black men is in the double digits. If companies, government agencies, and the nonprofit sector believe in true diversity, something must be done about this situation.
The ramifications of such high unemployment in Black communities are serious. Unemployment can lead to:
1. Increased Crime.
2. Incarceration.
3. Homelessness.
4. Mental Health issues: low self esteem, depression, suicide, etc.
5. Health issues. Studies have shown that stress leads to a variety of diseases.
6. Domestic violence. Taking anger out on those closest.
7. Sense of hopelessness.
There are many solutions that I will describe in my next blog.

The Serious Black male unemployment problem starts young and at home. I see a major contributor to the problem being Video games and Music videos and the image we are portrayed as in this media. With the video games the only ambition is to have the highest score and talk trash to your buddy. Young Black males waste countless hours everyday playing these game. Take a look outside and you won't see kids playing sports in the streets as was common in the 60's and 70's. They are all in the house playing video games. The image of the characters in these games is either a thug killer or an athlete clowning after the score with unsportsmanlike qualities. Neither of these qualities are useful in a business environment or society.

Music videos are even worse. The videos are produced by entertainers that have the talent to get where they are, but send a very damaging message. They give the impression that it's acceptable to disrespect women, acceptable to have a foul mouth, acceptable to not own a suit, acceptable to be covered in tattoos, the list goes on. What the viewer sees is what they want to be. Tattoos, sports jerseys and pants three sizes to big, might be okay for an entertainer but not someone looking for a job.

Working in the Corp world for 20+ years I've seen young Black adults, male and female show up for interviews and work as if they just left the club or the gym. Tattoos on their necks, clothes that don't fit, to big for the guys and to tight for the women. Their communication skills are lacking. If it's not slang they don't say it or can't say it. There is a department in my company that is made up of mostly part-time young Black adults from a temp agency and it's has the nickname "The Ghetto". It's called that because of the way they dress, talk and carry themselves. They show up anyway they please, if they show at all. Don't let it be casual day. Half get sent home to change. It's an attitude of "I'm doing the company a favor by working here". These negative qualities might get one in the door, but one will never be respected, valued or kept long. If one of these young adults comes in looking and acting respectable as if they belong or want to be there, they are then labeled as sell outs and suckers by the others.

The bottom line is "Bad in Bad out, Good in Good out" Whatever one feeds their mind with (young or old) is what will come out.

Turn off the video games, turn off the music videos and pick up a book.

I agree 100% with the previous comment. Many young black men are not thinking creatively and are not setting goals and considering future plans. They want the income from their jobs but fail many times in their attitude toward their positions and employers. I look at the way the young performers dress now and remember back to the times of suits and ties for the young men and formal glittery gowns for the ladies and now the men look like prisoners and the women look like strippers.
We have to start at home and take time with our children and read to them, talk with them, listen to them and treat them with dignity and respect. Slapping kids up side the head and cursing them will result in a child feeling unloved and worthless. How they think about themselves is how they will live.

I think institutional racism is a major cause of the high level of unemployment among black males, especially those with college degrees. Studies have repeatedly shown that the majority of white employers are more likely to hire another white male with weaker credentials than a black male who is better suited for the job (probably because they feel more comfortable with someone of the same race).Since most businesses and corporations in the public and private sector are run by white males this creates a huge problems for black men.

We don't have enough mentors. Our black youth blame every thing on their color and feel hopeless about their situations. Some situations are pure racist, others are the result of corporate cultures that have always existed, but every time someone is criticized, constructively or not, it is blamed on color. So it is a double whammy. If you don't have a mentor to weed out what is truly corporate behavior (acceptable and unacceptable), then it is difficult to tell the difference in what is happening to you. So many black executives are so busy looking up, they don't take the time to look back and give someone else a hand.

We see a clear example of what is really wrong in black society when we notice the post at the end of this blog which is focusing on penis enlargement. Strictly speaking ( and with tongue in cheek) this should be posted on a blog that would reach a white male audience!

Let us put the blame where it is - on the white supremacists who have so brainwashed genuine white Americans that they actually believe that they do not really see black people as inferior. But the minute you accept only the lowest standards from anyone, you are already tacitly admitting that you do not value what they are, or have to offer. You might pat them on the head like "kitty" or run your car over them like a mongoose, but the fact is,you dont expect any more from an inferior being than from kitty or the mongoose, whether you "love" kitty or are cruel to the mongoose.

Seriously, I work in Jamaica at an offshore call center. I am a free citizen of my albeit not very rich country. I have always been treated as someone with status, despite the fact that like every other Jamaican, I have a color.

Our White managers have somehow managed to bring racism to the workplace but very subtly. One very small example: Encouraging inappropriate dress at the workplace,in the form of a dress down day (against the wishes of Jamaican managers )and suggesting that dressing down serves to "Motivate the agents" only serves to reinforce the white perception of black people as ghetto. Why would dressing badly motivate anyone, unless they had no real dreams? What happens when they face a real workplace after they leave the protected Free Zone?

Those of us who decry the sluttish dress and gangsta look are deemed "pretentious" . So the minute we try to instill standards in our ( mostly very poor youth, who grew up on American TV) we are accused of being against our own people. Because, of course, black Jamaicans, a third world people, cannot possibly be aware of the correct way to do things, how to eat at a table, how to dress appropriately, now can they?

It feeds the white ego to feel that they are giving us something and the only problem really that they have is that they cannot deport us if we refuse to act like the Black & White minstrels in that infamous TV show of the 60's.

The agents are subtly encouraged to rebel against any form of discipline instituted by Jamaican Managers, however, they are fired the minute they open their mouths to say "but.." to the white staff.

Willie Lynch lives. White people play video games too and live unproductive lives. Yet, they are computer geeks - not bums. They dont just use guns on video screens, they have whole enclaves of gun runners in the woods of the southern states, gunning for "coon", yet no one worries about their unemployment levels - it is ok to be a thug, as long as you are white.

Until I began working with this group from America, I was absolutely not aware of what invidious, subtle pressure was placed on the black person to give up and give in. You are all heroes to have survived a minority role in a White supremacist country. I lift my hat to you all, every one, no matter what - that you are still alive in a country that hates you and systematically tries to destroy you overtly and covertly, by oversexualizing your women and brutalizing your men. By downplaying your accomplishments by suggesting every black achiever got there because of "equal opportunity", not because of his/her inate skills.

You have proven to be the strongest people in the world. God bless ALL black men everywhere.
